Prayer Plates

September 13, 2009
“Priority seating at God's Throne”
Focus
Luke 14:15, Luke 11:9, Hebrews 4:16
What is on your plate? Are you burdened with cares of the day? Are you struggling with doubt or fear? Are you rejoicing over His blessings? Are you mindful of the needs of others? Is your plate filled with leftovers from the past? Whatever you have on your plate bring it before the Lord in prayer. Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given you.” Luke 11:9 NIV

We have priority seating at the throne of grace with a view of heaven. At His table starters include thanksgiving and praise to God. Entrees include healing, blessing, and forgiveness from God.  The check has already been paid by Jesus. “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Heb. 4:16 NIV

Activity

Write your prayer petition on a paper plate. You may choose to draw using organizational maps or symbols to represent your prayer thoughts. For ideas on freehand drawing activities consult a book by Sybil Macbeth, “Praying in Color.” You might want to list what is on "your plate." List your leftovers from the past and ask God to give you freedom form past experiences that rob your joy. As you pray for specific people you may choose to write initials instead of the entire name to maintain privacy. Expect that He will show favor toward your request, believe He will do more than you ask for, and trust Him to accomplish it in His perfect time and in His excellent way.

Example Prayer

  • Begin the prayer with thanksgiving, “Lord, thank you for the view of heaven and for giving me priority seating before your throne of grace.”
  • Continue with praise, “You are my provider. You fill me up with your love. You are the living bread that came down from heaven. You give life more abundantly. My joy is in you Lord.”
  • Petition the Lord on your behalf, “Father, take away the burdens of my heart and give me peace. Renew my spirit. Prepare me for your good works. Consecrate me, cleanse me, and make me fit for your kingdom.”
  • Make requests on behalf of others, “Lord, comfort those who are distressed and heal those who are diseased. May all who seek you find you and be blessed.”
  • Confirm your faith, “Father, because of your overwhelming love I expect your favor toward me. Because of your goodness I believe you will do even more than I ask. Because of your faithfulness I trust your perfect timing and your excellent way.”
  • Close your prayer, “In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.”

Follow-up Activity

Look at your plate throughout the days ahead. Be mindful of how God is blessing you. Make a record of His blessings and be prepared to share those with the group.
